'Improving the Academy' through Scholarship
"I want to contribute to the body of knowledge in a way that others can build on my work,” Dr. Susan Hines says. "It's my contribution to the academic community."
Hines wears two hats at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota: she is the Director of Faculty
Development and Associate Professor in the Ed.D. Leadership Program, two half-time
positions. She is also an alumna, having earned her master’s and doctorate at SMU.
This is a lot to live up to, especially for a person with
the SMU username "shines," but Hines also takes her calling to scholarship seriously. One of
her published pieces, "How Mature Teaching and Learning Centers Evaluate Their Services," appears in the 2011 book To Improve the Academy, edited by Judith E. Miller and published
by Jossey-Bass (and on the shelves of SMU’s Twin Cities Library as part of our SMU Authors
Collection). She plans to continue to research and publish in the area of faculty development evaluation. The article continues here.
Google Scholar Makes Geek Chic
Google Scholar recently introduced two exciting features that will save you time and aid your research efforts. The first is a Cite link, which provides a pre-formatted APA citation that you can use in your References page - after you've checked it for errors, of course! The Cite link is located below each source listed in your Google Scholar search results.
The second new feature is Metrics, which lists the top-ranked journals for every field. Want to find out which journal is most often cited in the field of Education? Google Scholar's Metrics will tell you that it's the Journal of Educational Psychology. Metrics is located on the main Google Scholar search page, above the search box. Check out both tools by visiting Google Scholar today.
Wanna Be Sedated?
Twin Cities Library is ringing in 2013 by adding a new collection of anesthesiology journals to our
online journal collection. Some of the Library’s most heavily-requested journals are included in this
new collection, including Current Opinion in Anesthesiology, European Journal of Anesthesiology,
and Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine. The collection also includes Anesthesia & Analgesia and Anesthesiology, which the library
previously owned in print. Both are now accessible anywhere with an Internet connection via Journals A-Z.
