Mark Twain didn't actually say most of the things attributed to him. Neither did Will Rogers. If you're going to quote someone in a scholarly paper, you'd better get your source right. Here are some places to help you do that.


This site lets you search on several classic dictionaries of mostly American quotations, such as Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (10th ed., 1919), and Respectfully Quoted (a 1989 compendium of quotations from Library of Congress, compiled for U.S. lawmakers).

Less scholarly than Bartelby's, this interactive archive of quotations draws from more than 20,000 books on Project Gutenberg and other socially networked sites.
