Encyclopedias are good sources for general overviews of topics, especially subject-specific encyclopedias.

Britannica's general encyclopedia boasts that it is "written by Nobel laureates, historians, curators, professors, and other notable experts." Includes Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus.
