Interlibrary Loan FAQs

How do I request materials?
Please analyze the relevance of bibliographic citations prior to Interlibrary Loan request initiation as this is an important part of the research process. Materials must be requested using the request forms below.

How do I request an article?

What information does the library need about the materials?
For requesting books, submit the following information:

  • your user ID/barcode
  • password (your last name)
  • citation information (i.e. ISBN, title, author, publisher name and city, copyright date, edition or volume number

For requesting articles, submit the following information:

  • your user ID/barcode
  • your password (your last name)
  • citation information (i.e. journal ISSN, article title and author of article, journal title, volume and issue numbers, date, page numbers)

What is my username and password?
Each request must have the library user's library barcode number and last name, which can be found on his/her student ID card. If you need a library card, please complete the request form found in the library and submit it to student services. If you have had a recent change of contact information, please inform the library, so we can get your materials to you without delays.

How many items may I request?
Students, faculty, and staff may purchase up to 30 items per calendar month per person. If a user has over 30 requests per month, he or she may be referred to libraries that own the journal or book needed. Otherwise, requests over the first 30 will be held and processed the next month.

How much does it cost?
Most items requested via Interlibrary Loan are provided at no charge. However, in the event there is a charge imposed by the lending library, the library staff will contact the student and wait for acceptance of the charges before proceeding with the request.

How long will it take?
Books that are available within Minnesota take approximately seven to ten days to arrive to TC Library. If an item must be requested from out-of-state, it can take up to three weeks to receive the item. Articles sent via email take 2-10 days to process whereas print versions take 5-10 days.

How will I know when materials have arrived for me?
Library users will receive an email when their materials have arrived. Pick-up of materials is the user's responsibility and should be done in a timely manner. Materials for library users not attending class on the Twin Cities Campus can be mailed upon student request and confirmation of mailing address.

Can I renew books?
Users must request a renewal before the item is overdue. We do not guarantee requests because they are granted/denied by the lending library, which also determines the renewal due date. If a renewal is denied, the material is due back to the SMU library on the original due date. Users may check their library account to see if the item has been renewed. For instructions on how to submit renewal requests, go to Renew Books.

Where do I return the books?
Books must be returned to the SMU TC-Campus Library. Please be sure to include the slip inside the book so that it does not become misdirected. You also may return them via UPS. If you choose to return them through the Postal Service, and they are lost, you will be held responsible for paying the replacement costs. Please mail the item(s) to the following address:

Saint Mary's University
Attn: Library
2500 Park Avenue
Minneapolis, MN 55404-4403.

What happens if I do not return the books?
Books must be returned to the Twin Cities Campus Library on or before the due date indicated. You will be charged for lost materials. Please see the overdue policies for a complete explanation.
