Departmental Majors/Minors:
The department offers the full complement of courses for either a French or Spanish major or minor on the Winona campus. It is suggested that students interested in:
  • a professional career take Advanced Conversation, Civilization/Culture, and French/Spanish for Business;
  • teaching French or Spanish take Advanced Composition, Advanced Conversation, Civilization/Culture, Phonetics/Diction, and Teaching Methods;
  • continuing their studies in graduate school take Advanced Composition, Advanced Conversation, Civilization/Culture, three different period/area literature courses, and acquire a working knowledge of another foreign language;
  • any of the above complete a period of study abroad in programs through Saint Mary's or by major universities with which Saint Mary's has an affiliation. 

French Major: Nine courses (27 credits) beyond the intermediate level constitute a major. All students pursuing a major in French must take F306 as part of their course work. Students may enter the program of study for a major in French at any level. The following schedule of course work is suggested for students with no prior knowledge of French:
Freshman year - F141/142
Sophomore year - F241/242
Junior year - F306 and 3 other upper-division courses (courses may be taken concurrently)
Senior year - 5 upper-division courses (courses may be taken concurrently)
   **At least one semester of study-abroad is strongly suggested any time after completion of F242. Courses taken abroad will count toward the major with approval of the department chair.

 French Minor: All students pursuing a minor in French must take F306 as part of their course work.
1) A student beginning with F141 must take F141, F142, F241, F242, F306 and 2 other upper-division courses.
2) A student beginning with F142 must take F142, F241, F242, F306 and 3 other upper-division courses.
3) A student beginning with F241 must take F241, F242, F306, and 4 other upper-division courses.
4) A student beginning with F242 must take F242, F306, and 5 other upper-division courses.
   **Students who place into an intermediate-level course (F241/242) will receive four 100-level credits upon completion of one semester of study with a final grade of at least B. These credits take the place of F141/2.
5) A student beginning at the 300-level, must take F306 and 6 other upper-division courses.
   **Students who place into an advanced-level course will receive four 100-level credits and four 200-level credits upon completion of one semester of study with a final grade of at least B. These credits take the place of F141/2 and F241/2.

 World Languages and Culture Certification (French)
Licensure areas for K-12 certification in the state of Minnesota are currently undergoing significant change. Students considering teaching in this area should be in continuous contact with the chair of this program or the School of Education for a list of required courses. Students who wish to pursue a minor in French for teaching purposes must take at least twenty-one credits in French, plus the prescribed education courses. Students who wish to pursue a major in French for teaching purposes must take at least twenty-seven credits in French beyond the intermediate level, plus the prescribed education courses. All students seeking K-8 or K-12 licensure in World Languages and Culture (French) must demonstrate an intermediate-high proficiency level in all four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing) as outlined in the ACTFL Proficiency guidelines and successfully complete the following language courses:
1) F305 Advanced French Conversation
2) F306 Advanced French Composition
3) F331 French Civilization/Culture
4) F332 Francophone Societies
5) First-hand experience with target culture in US or abroad
   **In addition to the courses listed above, it is suggested that students take F321 French Phonetics and Diction.
