The Price/Paulson Jazz Quintet includes John Paulson on saxes and flute, Larry Price on piano, Richard Hammergren, trumpet; bassist Karyn Quinn and drummer Rich MacDonald. These musicians in have over 100 years of collective experience playing and teaching jazz throughout U.S.A and internationally. Their latest recording "Mobley St. Blues" includes 10 new compositions by Price and Paulson along with one new arrangement of a previously recorded tune.
Saxophonist and flutist John Paulson is currently a professor of music at Saint Mary's University where he has taught for the last 24 years. He earned his B.M. and Master of Music degrees from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and his D.M.A. in music education from the University of Washington in Seattle. His last three commercial jazz CD's have received excellent reviews throughout the region and all his music is gaining attention internationally through internet sales. His quartet has been heard at numerous concerts and festivals throughout the Midwest and he has been a featured artist at many festivals and clinics throughout the region. Larry Price, a jazz pianist, studied jazz at the University of Miami and at the Conservatory of Music in Luxembourg. He also studied with John Taylor. He won the piano prize three times at the Trier Jazz Symposium in Germany. He also has played with Steve Houghton, Bobby Lewis, and Eric Schneider. He
presently teaches jazz at WSU, arranges and composes for the WSU jazz faculty, and performs with his own groups in the LaCrosse and Winona area.
Karyn Quinn is Associate Director of Jazz Studies at The University of Wisconsin- La Crosse where she directs instrumental jazz ensembles, and teaches bass and music theory. She received her Master of Music degree in String Bass Performance and Jazz Pedagogy from The University of Northern Colorado. Karyn has performed in concert with many jazz artists including Diane Schuur, Ernie Watts, Clark Terry, James Williams, Red Rodney and Kurt Elling. She was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Fellowship to study with bassist, Rufus Reid and a finalist in the 1997 International Association of Bassist, Jazz Bass Competition. Karyn maintains a busy schedule as a clinician, free-lance bassist, and author. She is an active member of The International Society of Bassists and The International Association for Jazz Education. Her electric bass method books, Bass Sessions, are published by the Kjos Music Company.
Richard MacDonald is currently Associate Professor of Music at Winona State University. He performs regularly as a jazz drummer and vibraphonist in the Southeastern Minnesota, Western Wisconsin region. He is also principal percussionist with the LaCrosse Symphony Orchestra. Dr. MacDonald holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Education degrees from the University of North Texas, and the Doctor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.
Some of his performance credits include: Milt Hinton, Slide Hampton, Arturo Sandoval, George Benson, Eddie Daniels, and three years touring experience with Ice Capades. He has also performed on numerous CD recordings, live radio and television broadcasts, and national tours.
Richard Hammergren has played trumpet and been musical director for some of the top recording artists in the world. He has played on numberous movie sound tracks including several of the James Bond films as well as being the musical director for the Diana Shore TV show while living in L.A. California. In addition to the above, he worked for many years as a first call lead trumpeter for numerous shows in Las Vegas. Currently, he is an adjunct faculty member at both Saint Mary's University and Winona State University as well as doing free-lance work at venues like the Ordway Theatre in the Twin Cities.
