Piano Proficiency Requirement
Music majors, with the exception of Music Industry majors, must pass the piano proficiency requirement prior to graduation. This is achieved by earning a grade of C or higher on the final exams and in the classes of MU 125 Keyboard Musicanship I and MU126 Keyboard Musicianship II.
Students with a significant background in keyboard performance may satisfy the Piano Proficiency requirement by taking an examination. Details of this process are available from Dr. Ned Kirk, coordinator of keyboard study.
MU125 Keyboard Musicianship I
An introduction to the keyboard for music majors and minors with limited keyboard background. Emphasis is on functional skills, such as reading, transposing, harmonizing, improvising, and playing by ear, along with keyboard theory, technique, and repertoire. Prerequisite: music majors only.
MU126 Keyboard Musicianship II
A continuation of Keyboard Musicianship 1. Further development of keyboard skills focused on raising the level of technical proficiency and increasing the students' competence in keyboard improvisation, harmonization, sight reading, and scales. Prerequisite: Keyboard Musicianship I or approval of instructor (music majors only).
