Sophomore Music Department Review MU 299
All music majors must complete a comprehensive admission/review at the end of their fourth semester of study, as required in the University Catalog.
This review will typically be done in conjunction with the performance juries at the end of spring semester, you must sign up for a 20-minute exam session. (Two 10-minute slots)
Music Majors offered at Saint Mary’s University:
- BA in Music
- BA in Music Performance
- BA in Music Education (or certification via MA in Instruction 5-year program)
- BA in Music Industry:
- Music Business Emphasis
- Music Technology Emphasis
REVIEW PROCESS:
A. Written statement expressing career goals and plans to achieve those goals, including an honest self-evaluation of skills and weaknesses, possible roadblocks to success, and the beginnings of a professional development plan. (PDP)
B. Portfolio of selected course work, current grade report, recording of recital performances, othe supporting materials submitted to music chair one week prior to review.
C. Perform appropriate solo repertoire selection(s) on instrument or voice, demonstrating mature musical understanding of styles represented. Proposed repertoire must be submitted to Department chair on or before April 1st.
D. Interview with music faculty after the performance, focusing on student’s progress and potential for success as a music major.
Sections A and B (above) must be turned in to the department chair at least one week prior to the interview to allow for music faculty review of materials.
Students will receive faculty’s assessment no later than one week after the Sophomore Review:
A. Unconditional continuation as a Music Major
B. Conditional continuation (Example: piano skills lacking, faculty request student to take action and demonstrate substantial progress in preparation for piano proficiency exam.)
C. Discontinuation as a Music Major, other options offered specific to each student and his or her needs, talents and aptitudes.
