Restoration and Romantic Literature

    • Literary Encyclopedia and Literary Dictionary--- "The Literary Encyclopedia is an authoritative, up-to-date reference work written by named scholars most of whom are current university teachers. Its entries represent the state of the art in scholarly understanding and it grows in scale every week 9description from the web site)." Coverage is international , but most entries currently cover UK or Commonwealth writers. Biocritical information is supplied along with links to appropriate web sites and bibliographies.

    • A compilation of general sites, electronic texts and scholarly personal home pages on the Romantic period is available at Romantic Links, Electronic Texts and Home Pages, maintained by the University of Pennsylvania.
    • Many links for major British writers of the eighteenth century, as well as drama and theatre of the period, are available at Eighteenth Century Resources -- Literature, maintained as part of "Literary Resources on the 'Net" by Mr. Jack Lynch.

    Individual Authors

    • A good general site for biographical and critical information on John Milton is the Milton site, maintained by Anniina Jokinen.
    • The poet John Dryden is well-represented by the University of Toronto on its site for The Poetry of John Dryden.
    • San Antonio College Library has published a page on the life and works of William Congreve The Congreve Page, which includes biographical information, as well as full text of several of his dramatic comedies.
    • Selected poetry and prose of Alexander Pope has been made available by the University of Toronto at their site Alexander Pope.
    • One of the best sources for biographical and bibliographic information on Samuel Johnson is Samuel Johnson, maintained by Jack Lynch at Rutgers University.
    • A bibliography of the writings of Henry Fielding, as well as a biographical sketch, are available from the LitWeb -- Henry Fielding page.
    • Biographical information, criticism and essays on Lord Byron can be found at the Lord Byron site created and maintained by Marilee Cody. The University of Toronto has much of Byron's poetry available at their site Selected Poetry of George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824). A complete hypertext version of Don Juan is available at Electronic Don Juan.
    • Project Bartelby at Columbia University has made the complete poetical works of William Wordsworth available at their William Wordsworth site. Poems are searchable by keyword; with an index of first lines.

Victorian and 20th Century Literature

    Individual Authors

    • An electronic edition of Elizabeth Gaskill's biography of Charlotte Brontë The Life of Charlotte Brontë has been made available by Mitsuharu Matsuoka of the University of Nagoya. For full text of her novels , use the Brontë Sisters Page, also maintained by Prof.Matsuoka.
    • For information on the life and work of Lewis Carroll, see the Lewis Carroll Collection available from C. Fairrosa. The site also includes links to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There, and many of his shorter stories and poems.
    • Certainly the best single source for all types of information related to the life and works of Charles Dickens is Prof. Mitsuharu Matsuoka's page The Dickens Page, which contains links to e-texts, biographical information, criticism, scholarly societies and usenet groups, and much more.
    • Biographical and bibliographical information, as well as critical essays, on the life and work of Rudyard Kipling are available from The Kipling Society, based in the U.K. Some of his works (Jungle Book, American Notes, Collected Poetry) are available in electronic format from Project Gutenberg -- Rudyard Kipling. Both Kim and Stalky and Company are available in electronic format from Bibliomania.
    • The Victorian Web provides biographical information on John Ruskin, as well as excellent critical interpretations of his published works and links to other resources on the famous critic and writer, at the John Ruskin Page.
    • William Makepeace Thackeray is well represented on the WWW with biographical information and links to other sites from The Thackeray Page of Prof. Mitsuharu Matsuoka of the University of Nagoya. Both Vanity Fair and other minor works are available from Project Gutenberg -- William Makepeace Thackeray.
    • For excellent critical essays on the themes in the works of Anthony Trollope, see the Victorianweb's page Anthony Trollope -- An Overview. Electronic versions of many of Trollope's works can be found at the University of Toronto Electronic Library site.
    • Much of the drama, poetry and short fiction of Oscar Wilde can be found in electronic format at Project Gutenberg -- Oscar Wilde
