Perhaps the best online resource for Irish genealogical information, both for the beginner and the advanced researcher, is the Irish Genealogical Society International. If you are conducting any Irish genealogical research the $20 annual membership fee is well worth the investment!

A good site for the exchange of ideas and information is The Irish Ancestral Research Association (TIARA), a nonprofit organization for Irish genealogical and historical research and education.

The Genealogy Society of Ireland is not a commercial research service, but membership and access to their archive in Dún Laoghaire would be of tremendous value to researchers. Society members sometimes engage in reciprocal research assistance, and the Society sponsors a wonderful series of open meetings and lectures, and also publishes a monthly newsletter and quarterly journal.

The Townland is the smallest administrative unit in Ireland, but they can be difficult to find, especially if one does not have a sufficiently detailed map. The IreAtlas online Townland Database is a searchable index of townlands in Ireland, and is a wonderful tool for the researcher!
