About our Council
The Knights of Columbus
is a Catholic men's fraternal benefit society that was formed to render
financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance
are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families.
Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their
families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war
relief and public relief works.
The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J.
McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the
Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic
fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic
security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term
care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service
in communities.
The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to
more than 12,000 councils and 1.7 million members throughout the United
States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto
Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guatemala, Guam and
Saipan.
The St. Mary's University Council 5202
works closely with the St. Mary's community in Winona, Minnesota. The
Knights sponsor various activities on campus and promote the general
work of the Order.
What is a College Council?
Education enhanced by the spirit of Catholic fraternity
makes the college council program both an asset to Columbianism and a
valuable resource for the continued growth of the Knights of Columbus.
Although they have the same functions and responsibilities as any other
subordinate council, college councils have unique characteristics. They
involve students, faculty and administrators. They develop and implement
charitable volunteer programs that respond to the needs of the campus
community.
What is Saint Mary's
University of Minnesota?
Saint Mary’s
University of Minnesota is dedicated to advancing the educational and
career goals of today’s students. Founded in 1912 by Bishop Patrick R.
Heffron, Saint Mary’s is a private, Catholic, comprehensive institution,
administered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers since 1933.
SMU enrolls about 5,400 students. Of those, about 1,250 are traditional
undergraduates; the rest are adult learners in the School of Graduate
and Professional Programs.
At the coeducational, residential Winona campus, located in the majestic
bluffs of the Mississippi River Valley, the undergraduate College
curriculum combines traditional liberal arts and sciences with career
preparation in a student-centered environment.
SMU’s School of Graduate and Professional Programs is one of the largest
graduate schools in Minnesota. A pioneer in outreach education since
1984, the school creates communities of learning when and where they are
needed, serving both adult learners and the broader educational needs of
society. Programs are offered at SMU’s Twin Cities, Winona and Nairobi
campuses and Rochester center, with courses offered in Apple Valley and
approximately 75 off-campus sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
