The Brother J. R. Long Scholarship Fund

The Brother J. R. Long Scholarship was designed so that the mentally disabled of the Winona, Minnesota area may have the finances to attend summer camps which will help them attain their basic needs and social skills.  This scholarship was designed by Council 5202 in 2006 and approved by the Council Board of Trustees on January 11, 2007.  The immediate Past Grand Knight (or a Grand Knight-appointed Trustee) is the custodian of funds for this scholarship.  The Scholarship Fund distributes the scholarship funds in late-April/early-May of each year through Community and Home Options of Winona, MN to mentally disabled students.

Who was Brother J. R. Long?
Brother J. Raymond Long, FSC (known as "Shorty") was born in Chicago and entered the Christian Brothers novitiate at Glencoe, Missouri on April 30, 1939.  He taught at high schools in St. Louis and Minneapolis prior to joining the Saint Mary's College faculty in 1952.  During his 31 years at Saint Mary's he taught speech and communications, served as public relations director, founded the campus radio station KSMW (now KSMR), served as recruiter for Christian Brother vocations, and alumni director.  His Winona community activities included: past president of Winona Kiwanis (1975), Winona Community Theater board, Cotter High School development committee, WAVTI student service committee, Watkins Methodist Home development committee, and [the] Diocese of Winona communications committee.  He also assisted with the Winona United Way and the Julius C. Wilkie fund-raising committee.

Brother Long was a charter member of Council 5202 when the Council was founded in 1961. He was initiated into the Knights of Columbus just 2 years prior, on October 1, 1959. The De La Salle Chapel in Saint Mary's Hall of Saint Mary's University of Minnesota is dedicated to Brother J. Raymond Long.

Brother Long's honors included the 1982 Chamber of Commerce Leadership in Service award, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Outstanding Teacher of Higher Education (1975).  He received his bachelor's degree from Saint Mary's in 1943 and his master's degree from St. Louis University in 1952.  Additional studies were taken at the University of Minnesota, Catholic University, and the College of Santa Fe.  In 1984, Brother Long joined the Christian Brothers College faculty in Memphis, Tennessee and taught there until his death.  Brother Long died on Thursday, December 18th, 1986 at the Christian Brothers residence in Memphis, Tennessee.  He is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.

How can I donate to the Brother J. R. Long Scholarship Fund?
